Great idea #1 - Advanced organizers

What is it?

Advanced organizers are a visual and/or verbal ways to generalize and organize information before it is covered so that the student has a framework on which they can build more specific knowledge.

How do you create/do it?

Advanced organizers can be graphic organizers or other visuals that somehow organize the information in a generalized way. One way to carry this out might be to come up with all of the big ideas of a topic and use them to create big headings. Then you would need to organize the information into a "tree" or "web" or "flow chart" or other graphic organizers. We thought that the best way to present this information would be to both verbally explain it AND include a graphic organizer.

What are the benefits?

It reaches out to students with little background knowledge in the content area, and it is also helpful for students that learn visually or verbally rather than by reading. Students with special needs can benefit from the structure that will facilitate their language and cognitive needs. It also helps connect new knowledge with old knowledge.
